This week's Bookish Birthday celebrates Joseph Aloysius Wambaugh, Jr.

John Dickert of Mount Vernon Farms won Tears of the Giraffe for correctly answering the following question:

Born Jan. 22, 1937, in East Pittsburgh, Pa., this author began his career as a police officer in Los Angeles, but eventually became a fulltime writer of nonfiction police stories and novels. One of his best known books described the murder of a police officer in a field and the long courtroom drama that followed. It won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for nonfiction in 1974. In 2003 he wrote a book about a serial arsonist.

The correct answer: Joseph Aloysius Wambaugh, Jr.
